I can’t quite explain it, but I get a certain thrill out of working with fellow artists and creatives. It’s one of the reasons why we envisioned The Wilds in the first place; that it would be a venue where people of all kinds of talents could gather and build the kinds of days that dreams are made of. So, when we started the blog, I knew I wanted to highlight people who were doing this beautifully; working on their craft and treating people with genuine love and the highest level of customer service. Christy, who you’ll meet below, is the perfect example.
Can you tell us about yourself, and how you got started in the wedding or event industry?
I’m Christine! My friends call me Christy, and I’m the owner and creative director at Creative in Bloom, LLC. I graduated from Indiana University, Herron School of Art, and those four years were so creatively inspiring, I jumped right into advertising after graduation. I found myself in the position of designer, creative director, and creative services manager over the course of my 12 years employed by a few ad agencies outside of Chicago. I also won an Addy Award and Advertising Designer of the Year in 2007. That was the same year I had my only child, a baby girl named Annabelle. I found myself wanting more, that’s when my husband and I took a huge leap of faith to start my dream business, Creative in Bloom. This decision allowed me to achieve and live my dream, all while raising my new baby and I’ve never looked back!
Why is this your passion in life?
I’m a true romantic, and an artist at heart. During the course of planning their weddings, friends and family would often come to me for design services, because they wanted something special in their paper goods. After securing my first commission, I was hooked. I had landed on the best way to utilize my creativity to help people during one of the most important times in their lives. It was the perfect match. In contrast to my work in advertising, it was happy work. I could make people tear up, and make their visions come to life. I knew that this was what I was meant to do very quickly and started making plans for my business in 1998. It took patience and the right timing, but 9 years later, it happened. All good things come to those who wait!
What is your favorite product or item you’ve made, and why?
This is a hard one! Creative in Bloom, LLC started out specializing in custom, all-occasion stationery. Collaborating with other people, and meeting a need with beautiful graphics is one of my favorite things ever! Of course, I love the calligraphy service as well. Calligraphy is very calming and satisfying to me personally, so I enjoy the labor on those orders. The reactions from my customers however, brings me the greatest joy especially with weddings. Creating something so meaningful to them, that I hope will be an heirloom piece, is just so special and heartwarming. Often it’s the first time they’ve seen their names together in print. I’ve witnessed tears of joy. The invitation is one of the first in a long line of details for wedding planning and when they see their names together, it becomes very real. It’s a very special thing for me to get to share in that moment.
What does owning a small business mean to you?
Being able to create my own business is everything to me. I have found my true happy place with Creative in Bloom. I’m fullfilled and inspired. I have no doubt that this is what I was meant to do. I hope that comes through in my brand to to the clients I serve. I want the experience anyone has with Creative in Bloom to be happy and stress free. I certainly feel that work doesn’t have to be stressful or agonizing, and carving your own path to do what you really have inside you is the ultimate goal for anyone.
