Real Wedding Stories from The Wilds Indiana Wedding Venue

From the engagement story to wedding day, Natalie shares all in this Q & A with The Wilds wedding venue.

Natalie and Conor had a gorgeous modern boho wedding here at The Wilds, in Indiana. We adored the day that they curated, so we were thrilled when Natalie kindly took the time for a Q&A with us about her dreamy Nashville, Tennessee Destination wedding day! Don’t miss this real wedding story, full of ideas for your own wedding with us at The Wilds.

The Wilds: Real wedding stories are our favorites here, so how did yours begin? How did you and Conor meet?

Natalie: We met the good old fashioned way – online! Conor noticed me on Instagram and saw we had a mutual friend. He sent me a message, we went on our first date, and (I hate to be cliche but) the rest was history. We had so much fun on our first date that we kept extending it – going down the street for one more drink, playing a game of darts, etc. We dated in Louisville, where we both lived for a year and a half, did long distance for about 8 months and then got engaged in Antelope Canyon in AZ and moved in together in Nashville at the start of the pandemic.

The Wilds: That is so sweet! And your proposal sounds incredible, how exactly did he pop the question?

Natalie: The proposal was really special. Conor booked a private tour of Antelope Canyon. The Canyons are usually packed and even the private tours have up to 20 people on them. Somehow we lucked out and had 2 tour guides all to ourselves. Once Conor told them he’d be proposing, one of the tour guides asked for my phone and played photographer the entire time so I didn’t suspect anything. The other tour guide gave him a signal at the “wedding arch” in the canyon and they got the whole thing on video for us. It was really sweet and intimate.

The Wilds: Your bridal look was incredible – give us all the fashion details! Where did you find your gown and how did you know it was the one?

Natalie: I wore a dress by Martina Liana and found my dress at White Lace & Promises in Knoxville, TN. I’ve worn a lot of gowns in my life and I had a hard time finding a wedding dress that felt like more than just another gown. The small details of my dress (even though I knew guests probably wouldn’t see them) made the dress feel so special to me. I truly didn’t think I’d have a “dress moment” after shopping a few times, but as soon as I put my dress on I could see our wedding in my head – and I was wearing that dress.

The Wilds: And what about the color palette, what tones did you lean into for your late Summer wedding?

Natalie: We had a neutral color palette: White, gold, taupe and greenery. The color palette we chose really fits our personal style. We love simple, natural beauty.

The Wilds: Your wedding day felt so beautifully centered around you two. What were your biggiest priorities for the day, and what things really helped you to have the experienc that you wanted for your real wedding story?

Natalie: Our biggest priority for our wedding was to enjoy time together. We heard so many stories through our engagement of feeling like couples hardly saw each other on their wedding day, and also lots of stories about spending money on things they didn’t care about but people would “expect” out of the wedding. In our eyes, our wedding was to celebrate our union and love with friends and family – nothing else. We did a few things to accomplish this including a first look and private vow reading prior to the ceremony.

The Wilds: We are so happy that you kept that time sacred! And we know that the right vendors play into that as well, who were most essential vendors for your wedding day?

Natalie: The vendors that were non-negotiable for me included our photo/video team and HMUA. I actually booked them before we even had a venue. I have worked with Firm Anchor and Marie Fulkerson multiple times over the last 10 years and I knew before I was even engaged that they were both vendors and friends I wanted to be part of my big day.

The Wilds: We have to talk about that arch at the ceremony, it was stunning! How did you approach your priorities for florals on the big day?

Natalie: I knew going in that I wanted a floral statement piece, and I knew I wanted to put as much of the floral budget as possible into my arch. My arch by Laurilyn Farms was so dreamy! The arch could have been repurposed for our head table, but I chose to leave it in tact so people could take photos.

Then for the most part, we utilized provided decor from The Wilds. The Wilds is such a beautiful venue that not much needs to be done. I did bring gold chargers and white fabric for table runners, but otherwise most of our decor was provided, which made packing the car for the wedding that much easier.

The Wilds: The ceremony truly was a perfect focal-point of the day! So after the vows, after the wedding, where do you see yourselves in 50 years?

Natalie: I think we are both most excited about just experiencing life together. We have no idea what the future holds, but we look forward to doing it together. We really just enjoy each other’s company and spending time with one another. Our hope is to grow our family someday, but we’re just taking things day by day and enjoying this season as newlyweds to start!

The Wilds: That perspective is so beautiful! So what does the day-to-day look like with you two?

Natalie: Conor is a dentist and I work in marketing for a remote agency. I like to wake up when he does to get our days started together. We typically both work, go to the gym together after work, and then come home, walk our dog, and eat dinner together. On the weekends we like to stay physically active by hiking and walking our dog. We also love doing game nights with friends and family.

The Wilds: Wedding days are full of anticipation – what was your most anticipated moment?

Natalie: Our entrance and first dance stands out to me the most! Conor and I are both really into music and the songs we chose for the entire day all had special meaning for us. Choosing the music for the ceremony and entrance was one of the few things we sat down and spent a lot of time doing together to prepare for our wedding and it will always be a really fun memory we have. We opted not to take dance lessons for our first dance, out of a lack of availability, but we watched YouTube videos and practiced our first dance in our living room for a few weeks before our big day. We will always cherish our living room practice dance memories (with Pajamas and high heels on – lol!)

The Wilds: Having been through the experience now, what advice would you give to other couples as they plan their own wedding day?

Natalie: My advice for planning is to start early and don’t let it get stressful. Things are truly only a “big deal” if you let them be a big deal. Remember the reason for your wedding (your marriage and union) and don’t get caught up in silly things that won’t matter once the big day is over (what people wear, details being perfect, etc). For couples of The Wilds, check-in with Alison if you are feeling overwhelmed. Scheduling a few calls with her before my wedding helped calm my nerves about forgetting logistics and gave me so much confidence going into our big day.

The Wilds: We love to hear about how you choose us as well, as venue choice has so many factors. How did you find us, and how did you know we were the one?

Natalie: We found The Wilds through The Knot! After some twists and turns with our original plans/venue, I quickly realized how important responsive and quality communication with our venue would be. The Wilds went above and beyond from the very beginning as we planned from Nashville, TN.

We knew The Wilds was the venue for us for a few reasons: First, the staff has their stuff together – I cannot stress how important this is when wedding planning! Second, the beautiful outdoor pavilion made our outdoor ceremony plans much more secure. I knew that unless very severe weather or temperatures came through, we could continue with our outdoor ceremony plan. It eliminated stress from the get-go. And third, everything about the property is gorgeous! Alison and her husband really thought through important details and it shows. I could picture our wedding there from the moment we stepped on the property.
