Insights and advice from top Indiana Wedding Photographer, Courtney Sinclair
Today on The Wilds blog, we are thrilled to help you get to know Courtney Sinclair. Along with her husband, Cameron, this duo captures some of our favorite images at our Brown County wedding venue. Courtney agreed to sit down with us to help our readers get to know her a bit better, and to gain insight into her process and philosophy as a wedding photographer. In this post, we’ll get to enjoy her coverage of Madison and TJ’s picturesque wedding day as we chat about all things wedding imagery and heirloom photography.
The Wilds: We’d love an introduction for our readers who haven’t met you yet! Tell us a bit about yourself and your journey as a wedding photographer.
Courtney Sinclair: I’m Courtney! I’ve been a photographer since I was in my early teens, and while I didn’t know where photography would take me at 14, I couldn’t be happier where I am now.
I picked up a camera in the age of Flickr, an online website where you could share all the images you’re creating, talk to other young creatives, and more. Of course in 2024, that doesn’t seem like anything special–but before instagram existed, Flickr was exactly that. Being on Flickr kept me creative, and let me explore different styles of photography. At that time I was drawn to documenting my friends through all of our high school adventures, and then it turned into a love for fashion and editorial photography. Which all ties in to what we see on a wedding day–and why I’m not at all surprised I ended up where I did!
The Wilds: Tell us a bit about your working process as a wedding photographer, and what do you hope to help couples accomplish in their wedding with their images?
CS: I get the honor of working alongside my husband on a wedding day, and I love that for so many reasons. We’re high school sweethearts, I.e. Cameron has been alongside me during my whole photography journey. He’s actually the one who introduced me to my first film camera, which is such an important factor for how we got where we are now. Along with that, we can truly create a unique experience for our clients. As two photographers, we’re able to let the day flow seamlessly, give ample time to capture different angles of the day, and most importantly, connect with our couples (as a couple). We truly loved our wedding day, and it’s such a special experience to be a part of that day for other couples.
Together, we have over 10 years of experience in the wedding industry, and photograph on both digital and film mediums. We aim to provide an intentional gallery–a gallery of artfully captured details, mantel-worthy smiles, and journalistic snapshots that come together to encapsulate the feeling of the day.
The Wilds: That’s wonderful to hear the impact that film photography has had on you! How does the use of film impact your wedding photography coverage?
CS: We love the nostalgic feeling that film adds to a wedding day–along with the artistic, unpredictability of it. There’s been a rise in interest for adding film to wedding collections, and I’m so excited about that! A wedding gallery can easily feel a little commercial at times and I love that shooting on film brings me back to what got me into photography in the first place. Depending on the film camera, you can take an image without worrying about any technical specs. Shooting like that lets me be more artistic and more intentional at the same time. And I think a wedding day deserves that. Two people, who somehow met and ended up falling in love and now on this day are getting married–it’s magical. Why not capture it with some of that extra fun film nostalgia?
The Wilds: We’ve loved having you cover events with us here over the years. What do you enjoy about shooting at The Wilds, and what sets it apart from other venues in the region for you as an Indiana wedding photographer?
CS: So many reasons, but most importantly, I love the location. I brag about this to all of our Wilds couples and any couples we meet who haven’t booked a venue yet. The Wilds is located right between Bloomington and Nashville, and it truly provides a destination wedding type of feel here in the midwest. Both Bloomington and Nashville provide so many different types of scenery, lodging, and activities. Plus, being in that area means it’s nestled in the beautiful hills of Brown County–truly the most beautiful place in Southern/Central Indiana, throughout every season.
We’ve photographed more weddings at The Wilds than I can count, and it’s always one of our favorite venues to be at as an Indiana wedding photographer. Beautiful scenery aside, we absolutely love working with everyone on the team at The Wilds. They truly provide one of the best experiences for our couples, worlds better than most venues we work at throughout Indiana. They’re hands-on throughout the day for any issues that might arise, or they’re there to make sure our couples always have a fresh glass of champagne in their hand. Couldn’t ask for a better place to get married, in my opinion!
The Wilds: What is one piece of wedding planning advice that you wish all couples knew?
CS: Your wedding party size is a key determining factor on how relaxed of a day you have (99% of the time).
We personally love a smaller wedding party, and we’ve never had a couple say they wish they had more people in their wedding party. The more people in your wedding party, the more people to manage, the more people to make sure they have all their ties/shoes/dresses/etc. If you thrive on high energy situations, then yes, a larger wedding party might be for you! But otherwise, we’ve loved the trend of couples going sans wedding party, and instead just having their close friends hang out with them throughout the day without the pressure of making sure everyone is ready for all the formalities.
The Wilds: We’ve loved enjoying photos of Madison and TJ’s wedding day while sharing this conversation. What were some of your favorite parts of their big day?
CS: Oh, these two were just so kind. I think Maddy was more focused on ensuring that all of their friends and families had a good time on the day of, even us–which was so sweet. They both had so much fun just enjoying each others company on the day of, and enjoying the company of all of their favorite people. Those types of weddings are always the best to be a part of as a wedding photographer.
