Interview with Top Indiana Wedding Designer, Creative In Bloom

Get to know wedding designer Christy of Creative In Bloom. Her top tips for a completely uniquely designed event are sure to inspire you!

Today on the blog, we are happy to share a recent interview with Creative In Bloom’s Christy Wilson. If the mural in our parlor room has made you swoon, you’ve already fallen in love with her work. Starting with event communications and now expanded to full wedding design, Christy knows exactly what it takes to execute unique wedding style. Throughout our chat, we will be enjoying her work and the vendors who connected to her core design for Ann and James’ stunning summer wedding. We are excited to help you get to know this local gem better today in this conversation!

The Wilds: Hi Christy! Thank you so much for chatting with us today. You’ve been a cornerstone of beautiful Bloomington weddings for years. For those who may have not been able to meet you yet, can you tell us a bit about yourself and how Creative In Bloom came to be?

Creative In Bloom (CIB): Creative in Bloom was founded in 2008 after I left my corporate career as a creative director in advertising and officially rooted my life in Bloomington with my husband. As an artist and degreed designer with a BFA Visual Communications from IU, my aesthetic was always naturally meant for wedding work. Once I was able to embrace who I really was as a creative, everything started to feel right. CIB is truly what I’ve been called to do. 

The Wilds: The title of “event designer” might not be understood by all. Would you tell us a bit about what services you provide and what type of couple you might be a great fit for?

CIB: As an event design group, we offer a wide range of design services including day of Coordinating (with styling services). We essentially look at your budget for decor, stationery and details, get to know you as a couple and build a personal brand plan from there. CIB meets with your creative vendors and work as your creative directors, making sure everything you see on wedding day is cohesive is quality of design and aesthetic. Not in the market for all of that? We offer high quality decor rentals, trained and experienced hand calligraphy, watercolor painting, wedding stationery by the piece and gifts. 

The Wilds: What are some changes in wedding design that either you are excited to be seeing as a wedding designer, or things you would hope to see more of?

CIB: We are seeing creative copywriting on print materials and signage that add personality to your day! This year we are seeing tints and tones of greens as a hot color in stationery. Texture is always an important element and I love that we’re finally seeing that filter in mainstream weddings. Ceremony programs and meal menus are also a must this year, these communication touch-points add a truly luxurious touch to your guest experience.

The Wilds: Ann and James’ wedding is stunning! What were the early style notes and priorities that resulted in this unique wedding style?

CIB: Ann and her mother were some of the most gracious, clients who truly hired CIB with a trust  and love for the work we do! They wanted help with overall design and all of the details that build that event brand to give guests a cohesive and lovely experience. Given the time of year in the summer, and wanting to create something unique to them, we threw out “lavender and lemon” building upon Ann’s original lavender idea. The result is a truly joyful, elegant, and classic wedding with summery touches of whimsy.

As a designer, I am able to provide my couples with a great idea of how it will all come together before the big day. Clients receive cohesive and clear mood boards, full service design receives illustrations of their specific space with their specific chosen elements. I’ve found that this truly helps in creating an elevated and unique wedding style.

The Wilds: We have adored re-living Ann and James’ incredible wedding day. Do you have any specific reflections to share about this day?

CIB: Ann and James’ wedding was such a happy day after having to reschedule due to the pandemic! By the time we revisited design plans, our invitations and overall plan seemed dated to us. We started fresh and redesigned their invitation as our little gift for all they had to go through, it was such a hard season so their joy meant a lot to us. We truly love our clients and building that relationship with them makes what we do our passion!

We spend a lot of time with our couples planning. With Ann and James as well as with most of our couples, we are together for an entire year if not more. Being a part of making their big day special for them just means the world to us. These two truly deserved their happily ever after day, and it was a delight to see all of their vendors come together to create such a stunning celebration.
